I was born in Duisburg in 1954. My family moved to Hamburg, when my father was appointed concertmaster at the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

Between the age of nine and eighteen I learned to play the violin with the intention of becoming a professional musician. The early enthusiasm for working with wood and a visit to Mittenwald, South Germany, changed my mind and I decided to become a luthier.
