Stringed instruments have been documented in the Middle East since the 10th century, and a little later also in Spain and southern Italy. At the time when troubadour art flourished, fiddles had already spread through large parts of Europe (as far as Russia, Germany, England…).

Various forms and construction methods (e.g. with a parchment ceiling or with a wooden ceiling) were built side by side.
