Most of the instruments built by Burkhard Eickhoff are realizations of his own model designs. Since the 1990s he has only used spruce wood for the tops from the high valleys of the Dolomites, selected in the forest and felled at the ideal time. For the back, the sides and the neck with scroll he mostly uses flamed maple of Bosnian origin, or – especially for cellos – poplar or willow wood for the back and sides and the wood of the pear tree for the neck and scroll. His instruments are generally fully varnished, sometimes with color shading but without the common appearances of signs of age such as scratches and cracks.
