DAWNE H ADD AD
Dawne has been involved in instrument making for the past 30 years. It was chance – or destiny – that led her on this path.
Equipped with a masters degree in physics she was involved in nuclear power technology in France. While there she went for a ‘short visit’ to Cremona – a visit which stretched to 13 years. For it was there that she discovered the vibrant and fascinating world of violin making.
In 1978 she enrolled in the international school of violinmaking, where she studied under maestro Francesco Bissolotti. She then studied instrument restoration for two years under Bruce Carlson.
Since graduating from the school she has made numerous violins, violas and cellos. Her more than 60 cellos are played worldwide (e.g. the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.)
Dawne returned to South Africa in 1991. She lives and works in Muizenberg near Cape Town.
She is a regular lecturer at music schools and international music events. Her topics cover the history, construction and care of the instrument and bow.
She is currently replicating her success in cellos with magnificent violas.
